Marla Swift

Marla began the study of clarinet at the age of 13 with concert pianist and clarinettist Isobel Carter-Stockigt, one of the greatest teachers of clarinet Australia has ever seen. Marla’s studies continued with Isobel at Melbourne University Conservatorium.

During her student years, Marla won key competition and performance awards, including The Australian Music Examination Board’s Overseas Scholarship. As part of her Post-Graduate studies, she went to Germany and England under the scholarship and there, had the opportunity to perform in venues such as Wigmore Hall and to study with world-renowned clarinettists.

Marla has worked with soloists Dame Joan Sutherland, Dame Kiri Tekanawa, Yvonne Kenny and Jose Carreras to name a few. She has performed in Music Festivals in the UK, Austria and Germany and has been a soloist and recording artist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Some of the many orchestras she has worked in over the years include the State Orchestra of Victoria, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and Queensland Philharmonic. She has been regularly heard on the Australian Broadcasting Commission and has travelled

throughout Victoria, performing and lecturing to schools for the State Government. On the recommendation of Roy Shepherd, senior lecturer in music at the Melbourne Conservatorium, Marla began her music teaching career at the age of 17, as tutor of clarinet at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar School (Merton Hall). Her expert guidance and patience with students over the years has led to extraordinary success, including three Top of the State year 12 students – who gained perfect scores for solo performance – and numerous distinction and honour award students. She has been a national music examiner since the 1980s and has taught in primary and secondary schools across Melbourne. Marla has also lectured and taught at the Australian Defence Force School of Music, been tutor at the Victorian College of the Arts, and at Melbourne University Conservatorium, she has been tutor to graduates in teacher training. Through the years Marla has taught the Method outlined in this book, to many hundreds of music students, both young and old, from beginner to the accomplished performer. The Method demonstrates a lifetime of knowledge, and is unique in its detail. Marla shares her knowledge and experience with you.
